DESIGN FICTION.
What is design fiction and why are you telling me about it. . . The oh so "This was I school project and it's actualy kind of boring" definition is that design fiction is the use of a theory based design approach and it uses fictional scenarios to provoke questions and make statements about the future.
We see design fiction in movies like Avatar, Iron man and Star Wars. Design Fiction is basically using creative mediums (painting, drawing, cartoons, animation. . .) to portray an idea of a technology that does not exist at this very moment. Many designers use design fiction to describe ideas that they can't create right now because the technology needed to created it is either not fully developed right now or not available right now because it's still in development. Corning started out as a glass company that made glass dishes back in the 1800's, they've since moved to create innovative new forms of glass. They released a design fiction video back in 2012 to show their idea of how glass technology is going to be used in a few years.Corning started out as a glass company that made glass dishes back in the 1800's, they've since moved to create innovative new forms of glass. This wonderfully unreal garment you see is from Iris Van Herpen. He is one of the most technologically advanced designers and I love his almost couture/renaissance vibe. My classmate disagree, they say he feels very "space agey". I think the patterns and many times the silhouette gives of a subtle renaissance feel but it's most certain that his creations are technological couture. This is look is entitled Magnetic Motion. It was made using a 3D printer and a laser cuter machine. The laser cutter it possible to cut or engrave different patterns out of different materials. These patterns are being outlined on a computer program like Illustrator and Autocat.
IVan Herpen is the perfect poster child for an update about new technology and material development being used in fashion. |
I've realised that the majority of the people who visit my blog are fashion killas and fashion blessers and I'm aware that you may not care for technological developments I but believe it's extremely important to be aware of the world around you, not just whats happening in the lives of celebrities and politicians but also what is happening socially and technologically. Technological developments affect our lives whether we like it or not.
Most of us believe we're living in the Information Age but that's just not true. In my last editorial I went off topic and I was preaching about how we're living in a revolution. I still believe that and I did some research on this and I'm pleased to reveal that we are no longer living in the Information Age. The video below explains who, what, how, when, where and why.

The first few seconds of Part 1 are most interesting, give it a watch and you're still really truly not interest then move on. Give it try if you like you lost nothing, if you do like you've gained something.
